Dutton’s Cove, Herolds Bay
Herolds Bay, Western Cape
This was our second visit to this restaurant, the first having been in the summer, in November last year.
This time with the weather being cold and wintery, we chose to sit inside. We were welcomed and led past the cosy fireplace to a table next to the windows, with a view overlooking the ocean.
The overall ambience of the restaurant is a mix of rustic, relaxed, and coastal feels, decorated with elements of Thai and Southern Asian décor.
The menu offers a variety of seafood and grills. While we waited for our food, we browsed through the visitors’ book – a sketchbook of fun artwork and messages, by adult and child diners alike. We of course had to leave our mark in the doodle book as well.
I have a general rule that I try to follow when it comes to food at the coast, which goes as follows:
“When at the coast, eat fish!”
With that in mind, I tried the “Hake & Mussel Combo”, with grilled hake which was succulent and delicious, and incredibly fresh, creamy mussels.
As Ross dug into his Hake & Calamari Combo, he was heard to exclaim “This fish is divine!”
We remembered from our previous visit that Dutton’s Cove had amazingly succulent fish, and they most certainly didn’t disappoint this time around…
The music playing in the background added a quick and interesting twist to the vibe: from Def Leppard, some Slipknot slipped into the mix. The hostess dashed over to the music centre to change it, and seemed bewildered when we told her it was perfectly fine.
As almost always, Ross had to try the malva pudding. I do believe that it was some of the best out there, a definite 10 out of 10. It had an almost caramel-ish taste, deliciously accompanied with hot custard and chocolate sauce. Yes, chocoloate sauce! I stole a tester bite or 2, or 3. If it wasn’t for the incredibly filling meal, I would definitely have ordered my own serving.
Dutton’s Cove also offers guest accommodation and lodging. Whether you’re staying over or just stopping in for some great seafood, be sure to include Dutton’s Cove as a restaurant stop on your next trip!
